Used to replace lost teeth/missing teeth. Mainly 2 types.

  1. Partial dentures which is a devise that is made by a technician in the laboratory from the impressions the dentists takes. Materials can be in chrome which is light weight, thin and more tolerable in the mouth than plastic (acrylic) bulky dentures which can be taken in and out of your mouth i.e., it is not fixed in place. Used to replace 1 or more teeth.
  2. Full dentures used when you have lost all your teeth. They are usually made from a plastic material i.e., acrylic. The dentures can be taken in and out of the mouth, they are not fixed but must not be worn at night. Some dentures can be made to clip to implants thus giving them more stability so they do not move around see the section on dental implants. Please note even if you have no teeth it is important to have regular dental examinations.

Composite Bonding (White Fillings) :

White tooth coloured bonded fillings are used to fix your cavity (hole) or decayed tooth with minimum preparation as the material bonds (sticks) to your tooth and also gives your tooth a nice appearance as opposed to unsightly black amalgam fillings which also contain mercury.

Cosmetic Procedures (Private dentistry) :

Veneers:

They are like false nails that cover the front of the tooth. A great solution to improving your smile, or improving the appearance of discoloured, maligned or rotated teeth with very minimal preparation (very minimal cutting of tooth structure).

Tooth whitening: Enlighten and Opalescence systems available

A great solution to create a whiter, brighter smile. A fantastic solution to improve appearance of stained or discoloured teeth, with the beauty of no preparation (cutting) of tooth structure. The results can be achieved in under 1 hour in some cases.

Crown & Bridge Work:

Porcelain Emax Crowns

Crowns Cover the whole tooth to give it strength, they are used to fix badly broken down teeth, decayed, unsightly, discoloured, or correct misaligned/rotated tooth.

Porcelain bridges can be a good solution for replacing a missing tooth, thus restoring the gap, improving your smile and function i.e., eating. The results can be achieved in as little as 2 visits. Inlays/onlays cover part of a broken down tooth which require less cutting of tooth to restore function and appearance as opposed to a full crown (cap). Crowns bridges and inlays/Onlays are made from strong quality porcelain and even gold for even more strength.

Endodontics:

Sometimes the nerve can die in a tooth due to extensive decay or periodontal issues which can cause you a lot of pain and you may require a root canal treatment. This is where an access cavity is drilled from the top surface of your tooth very carefully to preserve tooth structure in order to access the underlying nerves and then with special files and rotary instruments the canals are thoroughly cleaned out.
This treatment is the last procedure before tooth extraction in other words a tooth saving procedure and can be complex thus is usually best carried out by a specialist Endodontist or special interest dentist. An Endodontist or dentist with special interest in Endodontics will usually be the most experienced and best person to carry this treatment out and will greatly improve your prognosis especially with the training they have had and the modern equipment they use such as a microscope which again increases the chance of a successful treatment outcome. On most occasions we advise after root canal treatment to have your tooth crowned as root canal treated teeth are brittle and can fracture.

Mr Kewal Shah is our dedicated special interest dentist in endodontics and we would highly advise you to see him for your root canal treatment needs. Ring the practice to book your consultation today.

Improve gum health, bleeding gums, bad breath, remove smoking stains and make your mouth feel fresh and healthy by visiting one of our in house experienced hygienists.

What is periodontal disease (gum disease)?

Book a Consultation with our dentist Carolyn or Avinash who both have a special interest in periodontics.

Periodontal disease is chronic infection or inflammation of the gums around the teeth that cause destruction of the tissue and bone supporting the teeth which can lead to loose teeth, receding gums and eventual tooth loss.

When periodontal disease is left untreated it can progress and lead to tooth loss. Unfortunately patients only come to us dentists when they are at a late stage.

After the age of 35, at least three out of four adults develop gum disease in varying degrees.

The primary cause of periodontal disease is an adhesive colourless layer, called plaque, which accumulates on the surface of the teeth. If plaque is not removed by adequate tooth brushing and good oral hygiene techniques, it hardens and turns into scale (calculus). Bacteria in the plaque produce toxins which lead to mouth odour plus destruction of the supporting tissue around the teeth. When this happens the gum separates from the tooth to leave a gap or pocket. This pocket must be professionally cleaned by your dentist or hygienist.

Treatment of periodontal disease :

Scaling and Root planing (SRP) or debridement is the professional procedure used by your dentist or hygienist to remove calculus and bacteria from around the teeth and pocket. This can be done with Local anaesthetic if teeth are very sensitive.

You may need several visits to slow the development of gum disease and regular maintenance visits. But the need for good oral hygiene technique by the patient is very important for success. These techniques can be learnt from our experienced hygienist team.

PerioChips :

PerioChip is literally like what sound like it resembles a chip like a small electronic chip or sim card for a phone. The Perio chip is inserted into the periodontal pocket to enhance SRP. The PerioChip is a Chlorhexidine Gluconate chip which is an antiseptic. The Periochip kills the bacteria (bugs) that cause gum disease. It does not allow the bacteria to develop resistance. These PerioChips can be inserted easily into your pocket by one of our dentist or hygienists.

With PerioChip, twice as many patients will have their periodontal pocket depth reduced to a maintainable level, compared with SRP alone. There is no need for an additional visit to remove the chip as it dissolves naturally. Needs to be monitored within 3 months.

With PerioChip placement you can eat and drink as normal, clean your teeth as usual. But don't forget to return for you 3 months review.

The two most important points to having success in combating your periodontal disease :

  1. Good oral hygiene i.e., good tooth brushing, we recommend you purchase an electric toothbrush as it does the work for you. We recommend oral B 3000 which we stock but we can get other products for you. it is also important to use other oral hygiene aids such as floss, interdental brushes, tepe brushes,  mouthwash etc. your dentist or hygienist will recommend what is best for your condition.
  2. Having maintenance checks and treatment with your dentist and hygienist. Its a joint team effort i.e., you and your health care professional working together in order to control your gum disease.
