Periodontics

What is periodontics in Rickmansworth?

Periodontics refers to the field of dentistry that treats conditions affecting the tissues around your teeth such as bone loss, gum recession and periodontal disease.

Periodontal disease, also known as periodontitis, is an advanced form of gum disease. Gum disease is a common condition but one that is preventable.

There are various stages – starting with gingivitis, which if left untreated, can lead to the more severe form known as periodontitis. Periodontal disease is serious because it affects the bones, can be irreversible and can cause your teeth to be lost.

If you live in Chorleywood, Northwood or the surrounding areas and have symptoms of severe gum disease, you will be referred to a periodontist for specialist treatment. We are fortunate to have a specialist periodontist – Dr Monal Patel – based at Inspire Dental who is very experienced in treating complex cases of gum disease using the most up to date techniques.

What are the stages for

Periodontal Disease?

Gingivitis

This first stage of gum disease causes symptoms such as sore, red, swollen gums with bleeding after brushing.

Gingivitis is caused by a build-up of bacteria in the mouth which forms plaque along the gum line.

Many people will experience gingivitis in their lifetime, and often patients will not have any visible symptoms which is why it is important to regularly visit your hygienist for a check-up.

Gingivitis is easily treated by your hygienist often with a thorough dental clean.

Early periodontal disease

If gingivitis is left, it will harden to become tartar, and this is much harder to remove.

Your gums will begin to recede, and pockets may form in your gums which will harbour bacteria.

Symptoms include inflamed gums and possible bleeding from the gums.

Moderate periodontal disease

As periodontal disease advances, you may notice more symptoms including inflammation, bleeding gums, bad breath and abscesses.

You may be in pain and teeth may become loose.

Advanced periodontal disease

In the final stage of gum disease, the tissue surrounding your teeth and your bones break down and you may well lose teeth.

Periodontal disease

Periodontitis has proven links to your general health particularly with conditions such as strokes, inflammation of the body, myocardial infarction (a heart attack caused by the supply of blood to the heart being blocked), and atherosclerosis (the build-up of fats in the artery walls).

Additionally, periodontitis is the number one reason for tooth loss in the U.K.

Regular check-ups

It is therefore very important that you have regular check-ups with your dental hygienist and if you notice any gum disease symptoms to get them checked out immediately.

If detected early enough, gum disease is treatable and reversible.

This will depend upon the severity of your gum disease. If you are experiencing gingivitis or mild forms of periodontal disease, it is likely that periodontitis can be reversed. For more extreme forms of periodontal disease where the oral tissue or bones have been affected, treatment will be more about managing your periodontal disease.
How long does it take for periodontal disease to go?

Again, this will depend upon the severity of your case. For early stages, it usually takes two to three weeks for gum disease to go as long as the treatment is in place and being followed. For more advanced stages of periodontal disease, treatment can take about five to eight weeks.
