Dental sedation

What is Dental Sedation?

Dental sedation enables patients from Croxley Green, Loudwater, Northwood and Hertfordshire who are anxious to go ahead with dental treatment without feeling distressed.

You may need or choose to have dental sedation if you:

  • Have a dental phobia or dental anxiety
  • Want to go ahead with complex treatment but feel nervous
  • Are having dental treatment which may cause discomfort
  • Have had a bad dental experience in the past
  • Have a strong gag reflex

At Inspire Dental our resident consultant in sedation – Dr Najla Nizarali specialises in treating anxious and phobic patients using different sedation techniques.

At Inspire Dental we use IV sedation and oral sedation.

IV dental sedation

In Rickmansworth

IV dental sedation is a safe and effective way to make you feel relaxed and remain conscious whilst you have your dental procedure.
A sedative is injected into your vein which hits your blood stream quickly. You remain conscious and won’t go to sleep, but you will experience a deep sense of relaxation which means you won’t feel worried or anxious. You won’t feel any pain and may not remember much about the procedure after treatment.
What is the process for

IV Sedation at Inspire Dental?

The process for root canal treatment has several steps and often requires more than one appointment.

Before IV sedation

At your consultation in Rickmansworth, we will check your general medical history and ensure that you are able to have IV sedation. We will discuss the process, along with the benefits and we will talk through the things that you will need to do or be aware of.

By law, we will need to make you aware of the possible risks of IV dental sedation and we will need to gain your written consent before we can go ahead.

Before IV sedation

During IV dental sedation

On the day of your appointment, you should not eat or drink anything 6-8 hours before your appointment in Rickmansworth. An adult should accompany you so that they can drive you home once your dental treatment is finished.

A cannula is placed on your hand and the IV sedation is administered through the tube to your vein. You will soon feel very relaxed and sleepy.

Your dentist will then carry out your chosen dental treatment. Throughout the procedure, you will be constantly monitored and your oxygen levels, pulse and blood pressure will be constantly assessed whilst you are having your dental treatment.

During IV dental sedation

After IV dental sedation

You will feel relaxed and sleepy for at least an hour after your procedure. Another adult will need to escort you home and there are certain things that you will not be able to do for 24 hours after your procedure such as not drive, not drink alcohol and not operate machinery.

Why choose

Inspire Dental for dental sedation?

If you have missing teeth and live in Sarratt, Loudwater, Watford or Hertfordshire, you should consider endodontics at Inspire Dental because

what is

Oral Sedation?

Oral sedation is another technique which we use at Inspire Dental to calm and relax patients before having a dental procedure.
The oral sedative is taken in the form of a pill and needs to be taken an hour before the appointment. The oral sedative is a form of Benzodiazepine which affects the part of the brain that controls fear and anxiety. With oral sedation, you will be conscious and able to follow instructions. You will feel calm and relaxed. This is a good option if you have a fear of needles.
